ADA Signs Chicago — Braille, Tactile, and Wayfinding Signage by TFA Signs

ADA-compliant signage is a legal requirement under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Illinois Accessibility Code for virtually all commercial, institutional, and public-access buildings. Non-compliant signage exposes building owners and businesses to legal liability and ADA violation complaints. TFA Signs fabricates and installs ADA-compliant room identification signs with Grade 2 Braille, tactile raised letters, non-glare finishes, and high-contrast color combinations meeting all federal ADA Standards for Accessible Design and Illinois state accessibility requirements.

ADA-compliant room identification signs must meet specific technical requirements: raised characters must be between 5/8" and 2" high; character height should be 5/8" above the surrounding background for tactile characters; Braille must be Grade 2 (contracted) Braille in dome-shaped cells with specific spacing; the sign background must have a matte or eggshell non-glare finish; contrast between characters and background must meet minimum ratio requirements; and the sign must be mounted with the centerline at exactly 60" above finished floor, positioned to the latch side of the door. TFA Signs produces every ADA sign to these standards, and our installation crew mounts all signs at the correct height.

TFA Signs fabricates ADA signs on photopolymer resin substrates (the most common and code-compliant method), acrylic with subsurface-printed graphics and raised photopolymer overlay, and CNC-routed solid acrylic. Photopolymer is produced by laminating a light-sensitive resin layer to a substrate, then UV-exposing it through a photographic mask, creating precisely raised characters and Braille cells to exact ADA dimensional tolerances. This method produces the most durable, dimensionally accurate ADA signs available.

Beyond individual ADA room signs, TFA Signs designs and installs complete wayfinding systems for complex facilities. A complete wayfinding system coordinates all directional signage — hallway directional signs, elevator identification, floor identification, building directories, parking garage directional signs — into a unified design language with consistent materials, finishes, and typography. TFA Signs has provided complete wayfinding systems for hospitals, universities, office buildings, government facilities, airports, transportation hubs, and large retail centers. We work with facility managers and architects to create a wayfinding system that is clear, ADA-compliant, and consistent with the building's design aesthetic.

Frequently Asked Questions — ADA Signs Chicago

What makes a sign ADA compliant? ADA-compliant room signs must have tactile raised characters and Grade 2 Braille, non-glare finish, high-contrast colors, correctly sized characters, and must be mounted at the correct height (centerline at 60" AFF) and location (latch side of door). TFA Signs produces all signs to full ADA standards.

Who is required to have ADA signs? The ADA requires accessible signs in any facility that serves the public or employs more than 15 people, with some exceptions. Office buildings, medical facilities, schools, restaurants, retail stores, hotels, and government buildings are commonly required to have ADA-compliant room identification and wayfinding signage.

Can you replace just the signs that aren't compliant in our building? Yes. TFA Signs performs ADA sign audits to identify non-compliant signs and can fabricate and install replacement signs for only the signs that need updating.
